Stupidity and vainglory are capable to turn human beings into the creatures that are stranger than those in any fables. Dostoevsky was a fantastic author and wrote some of my favourite novels, but this one, ostensibly about a man with a gambling addiction, is actually about nothing.

I picked it out of my shelf and began reading the back cover, in order to refresh my memory—only to realize that I had not read it yet!
