With the help of his friends, he becomes successful in establishing a refuge in the form of a valley in order to keep the old virtues of the Romans alive and avoid the many faults of the empire.
Overall, the novel proves to be a fine description of Roman history and shows the details of everyday life during the 4th century Britain. Author Whyte has made some allusions to the original details of the legends of the Arthurian era until Publius Varrus comes in contact with a stone, a sword, a lake, and a Celtic tribe known as Pendragon.
